The Junior Surf Group Leader course is an entry level development opportunity for SLSNZ members interested in taking on more responsibility in supporting delivery or delivering Junior Surf sessions.

PRE-REQUISITES

Junior Surf Group Leader course:

• 16 years of age

• Current member of a SLS Club

• Be Safer Module (online)

• Recommended: Safeguarding Children Module (online)

We encourage younger members ages 14 & 15 years who are interested in Junior Surf to help as active age group helpers, assistants, skill demonstrator or if qualified, water safety. This will provide them with the necessary hands-on experience prior to turning 16 years of age.

OUTCOMES

At the completion of this course candidates will be able to:

1. Understand the purpose of Junior Surf and its role within SLSNZ clubs.

2. Be familiar with the SLSNZ Junior Surf resources and how to utilise them in different Junior Surf programme styles.

3. Understand how to use a participant centred leadership style, while applying the Junior Surf Guiding principles.

4. Develop a range of skills and techniques to support delivery of sessions in an outdoor environment.

5. Be aware of tools, NSOPs, and best practice models of risk management for carrying out practical Junior Surf activities.

6. Have the confidence and competence to deliver age-appropriate junior surf sessions safely.
