Oliver contributed over 230 volunteer hours lifeguarding at the beach this season, gaining his First Aid Level 1 and IRB crewpersons award in just one season and is thoroughly deserving of the award.

Photo: U19 Lifeguard of the Year, Oliver Tyack

Pauline works tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring that all the administrative tasks that are required to run such a successful club are taken care of and ensures that members receive regular updates.

The club had several other finalists : Tim Jago Volunteer of the Year, Mackenzie Cook Rookie Lifeguard of the Year, Bernie Limbrick Official of the Year, Patty Wilson Most Outstanding Contribution to Junior Surf. The Club was also a finalist in the Club of the Year Award.

The Club is in a strong position currently with one million dollars being confirmed this week from the Auckland Council for the club's new lifeguard and community facility. The council contribution is recognition that Muriwai Beach is visited by 1.5million people from across the region.b Further funding is still being sought to enable the project to commence. For further information or to donate www.thesurfclubatmuriwai.org

Despite winter the club is still very active with the annual YMCA versus Muriwai fun run on Sunday 26 June, registrations 9am at the club, cost $5 with all proceeds going to the club.

A surfer was rescued from the rocks on Saturday by on call lifeguards after he got in to difficulties. The club operates a call out system over the winter with local senior guards and members of the Muriwai Surf School. All beach goers are reminded to check the conditions, surf with someone who knows the beach, and surf within their limits.

Movies on the Green

A big thank
you to the community for supporting our first “Movies on the Green” night. Approximately 500 people carried down their
bean bags, blow up furniture and in some cases armchairs down to the Village
Green to snuggle up and watch some fantastic short films and the surf doco
“Stepping Into Liquid”. Many thanks to
all the volunteers involved, but especially to our financial sponsors, Harvest
Fresh Ltd, Next Door Productions Ltd and Robbers Dog Films. Also, Auckland Council and the Rangers Scott
and Lynette whose assistance prior to the night made it so much easier for us
and the audience on the night as they supplied the portaloos!

Tim Jago,
presented the building plans and timeline to the audience and outlined what a
fantastic community owned building the new Surf Club at Muriwai will be. The new building designed by Jasmax, is
expected to be completed in July 2012, it will be the new home to many local
sports, leisure and interest groups, a purpose designed educational facility, a
gathering point for the local community, and the foundation of a strong and
prosperous volunteer lifeguard service ongoing.

Movies
on the Green was a combined effort from Muriwai Surf Lifesaving, and the
Muriwai Beach Progressive Association. This is a great example of two community based associations working
together to bring a fantastic event to the community. If you would like to be informed about happenings around Muriwai and
have the chance to get involved or make your opinions known, please come and
contribute at the MBPA meetings held on the third Tuesday of every month, 7.30

Owen Chapman - Jan 2010

Please email me any shots that you have from Saturday ....

As usual the presence of many out of town athletes at the Owen Chapman raised the level of competition several notches, as did the record number of (400+) competitors. Saturday was a good yardstick for the level of competition to be expected at the NRC's at the end of this month.

With bright sunshine and light winds, the only element missing was a swell.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the team this year is the growing depth of talent in the Open and U19 mens competition, this was probably best demonstrated by being able to field a competitive 6 man Open Taplin team.

Stand Out Performances

Highlight of the day was the win in the U16 Womens Board Relay. Brydhi Stark laid the foundation for this win, showing the rest of the pack a clean pair of heels in the first leg, Nivana and Rishan gave their all to make sure that maroon and gold crossed the line first.

The Mens Open Board Relay team gutsed it out to come third, with Stephen Butt footing it with the big boys, easily maintaining the ground work laid by David and Tom Clarke.

Emma Wilson maintained her high standards, coming 3rd in both the U19 Womens Surf and Board Race and then teaming up with Anna Mickel and Rosie Howard to come 3rd in both board and taplin relays.

In the beach events, the Open Womens Relay, U19 Mens Relay & U19 Women all came in third.

Fiona Whyte got the best sprint result coming a very clear 2nd in the U19 women.

In the flags, for the second carnival in row a clean northern region sweep of 1,2 and 3 in the U19 Womens Flags was gained by Brydhi, Nivana and Rosie. Brydhi followed this up with a second in the U16 Womens Flags.

Coach's Comments...

Overall it was good to see that everyone was enjoying themselves and performing well. However there is still a fair way to go - in terms of our training and skills

Wave of the Day

Race 1 of Womens Boat. Used wave to make up 25m gap and then overtake Waihi on the run, to win the heat.

Drama of the Day

NONE :)

Omaha Carnival - Dec 09

With Bethells getting a shade gnarly, the carnival was moved to the quieter havens of Omaha.

3 cycles of swim, board and ski tested the endurance of most, if not all of the athletes.

Stand Out Performances of the Day

Rishan Poching was easily the hardest working Muriwai athlete on the beach, contesting and getting placed in each of her water events for all three rounds, including second in the U19 Ironwoman.

The girls beach sprinting and flagging saw the club getting our biggest haul of points. Alison Craige, Brydhi Stark & Fiona Whyte gave us a clean sweep in the U19 Flags with Brydhi also winning the Open Flags. Nivana Johnson came 2nd in U16 and 1st in the Open Beach Sprint.

The Womens boat crew exploding onto the scene, taking out both the Short and Long Course events.

Andrew Whyte was on fire and steamed through his U19 Surf races.

Tom Clarke seems to have discovered that kiwi trait of doing very well while sitting down ;) All you ski paddlers should check this guy out to see how you rate up large at the start of a ski race.

Courtney is continuing to perform very well, and most noticeably in the board.

David Butt is getting better with each carnival - coming a very close second in each of his three board races.

Cameo Appearances

Jenny Stark bravely throwing down the gauntlet to all in the masters surf race !!!!

Lauren putting in a very fast paddle out to the back bouy in one of the open board races and Kane donning a very sporty orange beanie to contest the beach sprint and the flags.

Manya showing that she didn't need to follow the black line to get a good result in her first couple of U16 surf races. Welcome to Muriwai :)

As surf was conspicuous by its absence, there were only a couple of decent waves all day, however ...

Wave of the Day

Muriwai Carnival - Dec 09

Team events were the order of the day, strongly favouring the clubs with the luxury of large numbers of competitors. As expected, the Muriwai team put together teams as best they could, with some very good outcomes.

It was great to see such a great showing from the guys. It has been a while since Muriwai has fielded stong teams in both U19 and Open Mens Taplin, with the guys coming 2nd and 3rd respectively.

On the sand, wins were gained in the Open and U19 womens beach relays, with the U16's girls coming a very close 2nd. Chris Butt managed a good turn of speed to bring home the U19 guys into 3rd.

The board relays were well contested, with the best result being a win by the U19 women, 2nd's by the Open Women and U19 Men and 3rd in the U16 women.

Waves of the Day

    1. Anaru Clarke - Swimmer, U19 Mens Taplin Relay
2. Emma Wilson - Swimmer, U19 Womens Taplin Relay
3. Nivana Johnson - U16 Womens Surf Teams

Full Results : HERE

Boaties

Fantastic Results for both the Mens and Womens Crews. With the Mens crew coming second overall for the day.

A result of the flash, new, go-fast paint job?

NZ Kayak Championships - Rotorua

While our team missed Rishan Poching's hard working presense on the beach, she had an extremely sucessful weekend at the NZ Kayak Champs at Rotorua, coming 3rd in the U17 K1 500m.

For many this will be no surprise, as Rishan has been making the most of the opportunities offered by the Waitamata Canoe and Kayak Club.

She has not been alone getting paddling time on the water over winter, with David Butt being heard to pronounce that he was extremely surprised at how much he learnt about ski paddling from these people and in an very short space of time.

Source: Muriwai Carnival - Dec 09

Omaha Carnival - Nov 2009

Despite reasonable surf conditions on the West Coast, this event was moved to the sheltered enclave of Omaha. Muriwai fronted with a slightly below strength team due to the exam season being in full flight.

The biggest highlight of the day was the overall points result achieved by the team. Muriwai with 155 points, finished second behind Orewa. This was an awesome achievement, and was a direct result of all of the team doing their very best in every event that they entered into. Muriwai demonstrated its growing strength in surf sports by gained placings across all categories of competition.

The Open Boat Crew had a very good showing and were in strong contention during each of their races. The Womens Crew, gained a very creditable 3rd place overall. Alison Cragie, from the womens crew, took out the U19 Womens Beach Flags, Muriwai also took out 5 of the 6 top places in this event.

In the Sports Arena, the U19's laid the foundation for the overall Muriwai result by convincing beating out all of the other teams. Andrew Whyte and Tom Clarke were consistantly in the front of the field in their preferred events, surf race and craft respectively. Emma Wilson and Anna Mickel grafted away in multiple events to bring in a large swag of points.

Courtney McConnichie is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the Open Women's events and David Butt showed that he has still got it, gaining a very creditable second in one of his board races.

Not satisfied with dominating their own age group, the U16 girls did a fine job of bolstering the points talley by playing up in the sprints and flags. Nivana Johnson was on fire, especially in the open flags, and Brydhi Stark had a fine sprint result in the U19. Rishan Poching did the talking on the water, gaining places in all of her events, plus she is starting to looking extremely comfortable paddling the ski.

Steven Butt completed his first ironman in a creditable 4th place to add to a second in one of his board paddles.

Full Results: More

Source: Omaha Carnival - Nov 2009
