Junior Surf

Welcome to the Junior Surf Division of the Muriwai Volunteer Lifeguard Service Inc.

Our Club's vision statement is: Whatever it takes to keep us great !!!! We hope that you too, will adopt this vision and make this club the greatest club around!

In Junior Surf we provide a range of opportunities for your children to learn surf safety skills, to develop friends, to participate in both competitive and non-competitive surf sports opportunities and to take part in leadership opportunities that will give them the skills they require for everyday living.

We aim to provide a safe environment for you and your children to enjoy the challenges provided by Muriwai beach.

Children have the opportunity during their time in nippers to complete Surf Life Saving New Zealand's Junior Surf Achievement Awards levels 1 – 5. The skills in these awards are taught and assessed throughout the season hence it is important that your children attend every week that Junior Surf operates. Even during inclement weather there are numerous activities that we will still be able to teach your children. In their final year of Junior Surf they are able to take part in the Rookie Lifeguard program which gives them the skills required to become a lifeguard at our beach.

Children under the age of 14 years must have one adult (parent or guardian) enrolled as a member of Muriwai Surf Lifesaving Club. Children must not be left unattended at the beach.

Swimming Abilities and Expectations

There is no requirement for Junior Surf members to be strong swimmers. However in view of the environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that they do have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through the age groups their swimming ability increases.

For your children's safety and to ensure that they receive maximum enjoyment and benefits from the programme, we encourage parents or caregivers to consider, where necessary, enrolment for swimming lessons with a local qualified instructor.

200 Metre Badge

To gain the 200 metre badge, which is required to compete in water events at surf carnivals, an individual must swim 200 metres freestyle and tread water with a hand in the air for one minute in under 8 minutes in the pool or in 10 mins in the sea (dependent upon surf conditions). The Junior Surf Division will hold 200 metre badge trials within the first few weeks of the season and again further into the season.

All children, with the exception of Tadpoles, are expected to compete at surf carnivals. Surf carnivals prepare your children to cope under pressure which is an essential skill required for lifeguarding at Muriwai. Some of the early carnivals are non-competitive with the main aim being to gain confidence and Surf Sport experience.

Children unable to attain their 200 metre badge can still compete in some specified beach events at summer carnivals.
